Sunway Unemployment Forum

SUNWAY UNEMPLOYMENT FORUM

Goal

  • tackle the current situation of high youth unemployment and underemployment.
  • and to promote better outcomes for youth in the longer run by equipping them with relevant skills and removing barriers to their employment

Our mission

The mission is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people in Sunway village.

The Sunway unemployment forum provides a forum in which governments and the private sector can work together to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems. We have to work with the government and the private sector to understand what drives economic, social and environmental change. We measure productivity and flows of trade and investment.

Focus areas:

– Care of vulnerable children

– Reduction of alcohol abuse and associated violence

– Community approaches to prevention of HIV infection

– Strengthening livelihoods.

The SUF’s core values

  • Open: We encourage debate and a shared understanding of critical global issues.
  • Bold: We dare to challenge conventional wisdom starting with our own.
  • Pioneering: We identify and address emerging and long term challenges.
  • Ethical: Our credibility is built on trust, integrity and transparency.

Unemployment is around 40% of the adult population; despite this, the number of people starting businesses due to having no other option for work (necessity entrepreneurship) is low. There has been an increase in women’s entrepreneurship primarily due to government support, but the perception of opportunities to start a business, and confidence in one’s own abilities to do so, remains alarmingly low compared to other sub-Saharan African countries.

Challenges

The main challenge is to provide jobs and/or opportunities for the youth, where the estimated unemployment level is in excess of 60%. This can be assisted through education; however, the level and quality of education in South Africa is one of the worst in the world. The level of mathematics and science education in the country, as assessed by the Global Competitiveness Report (2014/2015), puts South Africa at #144 of 144 countries.

Youth Unemployment

Youth unemployment has been on the rise. Even more troublesome is the dramatic rise in the number of youth not in employment, education or training, which has led to widespread concerns about the impact on social cohesion and fears of a “lost generation”. Given the extreme differences in youth unemployment levels among communities, it is clear that no single labour market policy will be appropriate throughout South Africa. There may, however, be opportunities for mutual learning on how to combat unemployment. This Forum explores youth and adult unemployment in Suway. It also examines dual vocational training as one potential solution.

We currently do have some paved roads in Sunway. We would like to have paved roads to avoid potholes and maintenance.
